Testimonial – Vukile (Community Collab)

How Vukile Became a Catalyst for Small Business Growth

In communities across South Africa, the challenges of unemployment and economic disparity are felt deeply. For Vukile Property Fund, these challenges presented not just a responsibility, but an opportunity to make a real difference. With a longstanding commitment to social responsibility, Vukile aimed to strengthen local connections, support small businesses, and, in doing so, uplift entire communities.

The Challenge
Vukile’s vision has always been to create more than just shopping centres. They strive to build spaces that nurture and sustain the communities around them. Recognising the struggles faced by local entrepreneurs, Vukile sought to find a way to offer meaningful support that would have lasting impacts on both the businesses and the broader community.

The Solution: Community Collab
In partnership with Creative Chemistry, Vukile launched the Community Collab initiative — an initiative designed to drive small business growth in the areas surrounding their shopping centres. To address their challenges head-on, we introduced the ‘Going Up’ initiative – a simple yet effective marketing programme aimed at empowering small businesses around Vukile’s centres. The project was more than a marketing effort; it was a genuine attempt to provide the tools and knowledge necessary for local entrepreneurs to succeed.

Key elements of the initiative:
• Business Coaching: At nine of Vukile’s centres, local entrepreneurs were offered practical business coaching, tailored to their unique needs and challenges.
• Brand Support: To help these businesses gain visibility, Vukile provided custom pull-up banners and business cards, ensuring they could present themselves with confidence and professionalism.

Growth & Impact
The Community Collab initiative proved to be a catalyst for growth among participating businesses. By focusing on real needs and providing hands-on support, Vukile helped these enterprises not only survive but thrive, contributing to the economic resilience of their communities.
• 1,419 entries were received from interested businesses.
• 83 businesses received tailored training, impacting 521 community members.
• 57% female participation and 79% Black-owned businesses.
• 9 shopping centres were involved, each becoming a hub of local economic activity.

Why It Worked
The success of the Community Collab lies in Vukile Property Fund’s deep-rooted commitment to the communities they serve. Their approach was not about quick wins but about fostering long-term small business growth and stability. By listening to the needs of local entrepreneurs and providing the right tools and training, Vukile helped these businesses build a strong foundation for future success.

What Participants Had To Say
• Themba, Kwamashu: “The banner significantly boosted our business visibility. Vukile’s support has been invaluable.”
• Vuyo, Bloem Plaza: “The training was eye-opening. I now know what a professional business plan should look like.”
• Charlotte, Atlantis City Mall: “This initiative sets Atlantis City Mall apart. The banner and business cards are game-changers for us.”

The Community Collab is not just a corporate social responsibility (CSI initiative). It’s a testament to Vukile’s ongoing commitment to creating sustainable communities. By empowering local businesses, Vukile is investing in the future of the people that make their shopping centres viable.
